"Nothing
excellent was ever achieved without
enthusiasm." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Why do drama? Maybe you
don't know just where to fit in in high school, and under the lights is
not an appealing place. A writer friend of mine says that "High School
is four years with no place to hide." I know how true those words are.
Yet, if there WAS someplace to find yourself and find some excitement
and some acceptance, it is the Viking Theater Company. Just ask any
current member!
You can get skilled now!
Explore all of the aspects of acting, with
concentration on : basic acting skills - developing inner resources,
practicing
basic movement, improving voice and public speaking skills;
intellectual
development, analytical thinking/reading and objective reasoning
skills; the
elements of theatricality such as lighting, set design, costuming,
make-up
etc., all of which are great outlets for creativity; careers in theater
management such as producing, directing, public relations, stage
management,
box office and house management.
Don't
be a deadbeat! Someday, YOU can be a better Surgeon ... or a
better teacher or
carpenter or systems analyst or who knows, maybe an actor...and you can
START
right now. Whatever you choose to do with your life, you'll be better
prepared
for it by participating in The Viking Theater Company. Theater is more
than
just an exploration of cherished cultural treasures. It instills
discipline,
hones group skills, exposes you to the rigors of work under pressure
and to the
rewards of committed, goal-oriented effort. It teaches communication
skills that
will last a lifetime. It is an integral and essential part of your
complete
education. Students who participate in drama score on the average 66
points
higher on SAT's. Then again, maybe your next stop after Wareham is New
York or LA, like several VTC alumni!
So what are you waiting for? Join today!
When you
do...B.Y.O.A. (attitude). Your
participation reflects high expectations and a desire to work on your
part. It
is important that we acknowledge that the VTC is a professional company
with a
seriousness of purpose and a concentration of efforts that marks it as
one of
the special programs in the area. It is our intention to sustain our
standards
and the demands those standards make on all of us. The theater, as of
course
you know, is a most collective art. As such it requires of all of us a
great
deal of discipline; all of you have, I believe, the potential for
serious work
and surprising growth. You, as a student, bring your talent with you.
It is
something that cannot be bestowed by any school or by any teacher. The
talent
that you bring can be trained and developed and applied. That is what
we aim to
do here. The effectiveness of your training will depend on how well you
discipline yourself to take advantage of it.
And the
rewards?
I
know that your participation in the Viking Theater Company has the
potential to
change your life if you are willing to be a team player and to dedicate
yourself to discipline and hard work. I also know that there are fewer
opportunities at WHS to have more fun, or to experience excellence on a
deeply personal
level. I hope to see you on Mondays
and Thursdays from 3 to 6:30.
